Group Exhibition | Face to Face

at the Aspen Chapel Gallery in Aspen, CO

I was part of a group show featuring artists working in portraiture (for the most part). This series of 6 heads was something I’d had envisioned a year or so before after listening to a Radiolab podcast (“Elements”). There was a story about a woman experiencing bipolar disorder and how after taking lithium (element #3), she was able to gain more control. Sylvan Esso was commissioned by Radiolab to write “Jaime’s Song” which played at the end of that story and I loved the whole thing, especially a line that says “I remember what I thought I was”. The idea that one simple change to your body’s chemistry, like taking some lithium, one of the basic elements on this planet, was eye opening to me. You’ve probably heard or read that quote from Carl Sagan about everyone being stardust, but that concept combined with this story and song took me to this place of the 6 portraits of people young and old, any/all genders, races, etc.
